Why does stress make it hard to relax or switch off?

Stressed/Burned Out

/core-emotion/stressed-burned-out

When you’re stressed, your body prioritises vigilance over rest. Even if your mind understands that nothing urgent is happening, your nervous system may still be scanning for threats, keeping muscles tense and thoughts active. This is why switching off can feel frustrating or impossible.

Relaxation isn’t just a mental decision, it’s a physiological state. If your system hasn’t received enough signals of safety, it resists slowing down. This is especially common during burnout, where stress has become the baseline rather than the exception.

Music can help because it bypasses overthinking and works directly with the nervous system. Steady rhythms, soothing harmonies, and predictable sound patterns can gently cue the body toward calm, without needing effort or focus.

Over time, repeated exposure to calming sound environments can make relaxation feel more familiar again. Instead of forcing yourself to unwind, music allows the body to relearn what 'off' actually feels like.

Things to try

  • Chakra-based: Music associated with the heart or throat chakra can support a sense of openness and emotional release when stress feels stuck.

  • Music wellness pause: You might experiment with slow, ambient music and simply letting your body respond, without trying to relax or change anything, for a few minutes.

  • Mindfulness: Let attention rest on one consistent sound, such as a drone or low tone, whenever you notice the urge to 'stay alert.'

  • Wearables or cues: If you wear a smartwatch or use reminders, some people find brief prompts helpful for taking short, sound-based pauses during the day.
