Stress usually comes and goes with pressure, while burnout feels deeper and longer-lasting. If rest doesn’t help, motivation stays low, and even small tasks feel heavy, it may be burnout. Stress feels activated; burnout often feels flat, numb, or emotionally drained.
Stress is often tied to something specific. Deadlines, responsibilities, or short-term pressure can raise your energy and tension, but there’s usually relief once things ease or you rest.
Burnout builds more slowly. It shows up as ongoing exhaustion, reduced motivation, emotional distance, or a sense that you have nothing left to give, even when demands haven’t increased.
One key difference is recovery. With stress, rest usually helps you rebound. With burnout, rest alone may not feel restorative, and the tiredness can feel deeper than physical fatigue.
Neither means you’ve failed. Both are signals from your nervous system that your current pace or load needs adjustment.
