How do energy drinks stop me from feeling tired?

Low Energy/Tired

/core-emotion/low-energy-tired

Energy drinks reduce feelings of tiredness by stimulating alertness systems rather than restoring energy. Caffeine blocks adenosine (the chemical that signals fatigue), while sugar, carbonation and strong flavours increase sensory arousal, making tiredness feel less noticeable for a short period.

This effect is temporary because stimulation doesn’t replace depleted energy. Once caffeine wears off and blood sugar levels shift, fatigue can return quickly, sometimes feeling stronger than before. The body still needs recovery, even if tiredness is briefly masked.

Energy drinks work best as short-term alertness tools, not solutions for ongoing fatigue. When used repeatedly, they can disrupt natural energy regulation and make it harder to recognise when rest or pacing is needed.

Things to try

  • After having an energy drink, note the time when you first feel more alert and when tiredness returns, checking whether the effect lasts under two hours, which suggests masking rather than recovery.

  • On a different day at the same time, skip the energy drink and take a short walk or do light movement for 5 minutes, then compare whether alertness changes in a similar way.

  • Within 30 minutes of drinking one, check whether your body feels jittery or just clearer, noticing which sensation dominates, as jitteriness often indicates stimulation without real energy gain.
