Is it better to use music or caffeine when I feel exhausted?

Low Energy/Tired

/core-emotion/low-energy-tired

It depends on why you’re exhausted. Caffeine increases stimulation, which can help when sleep pressure is low but alertness is underpowered. Music supports regulation instead, helping your nervous system organise energy that’s already there without borrowing from future recovery.

If exhaustion comes from poor sleep, illness recovery, or prolonged stress, caffeine often masks fatigue and leads to a sharper drop later. Music tends to work better in these states because it lowers effort and supports pacing rather than override.

When energy is genuinely low, the question isn’t what boosts you fastest, it's what helps you function without increasing the crash afterward.

Things to try

  • On two separate low-energy mornings, use music first on one day and caffeine first on the other, then check your energy 90 minutes later, noting which option leaves you steadier rather than flatter or jittery.

  • Play steady, instrumental music at a moderate volume and notice whether task initiation happens without needing caffeine, using the ability to begin as the validation signal.

  • If you do choose caffeine, delay it by 20 minutes and observe whether music alone reduces heaviness or brain fog first, using reduced urgency for caffeine as the indicator it wasn’t strictly necessary.

Affirmations

These affirmations are simple reminders that it’s okay to slow down when you’re feeling tired. You might read one and pause with it, return to it while listening to the music (above), or just let the words pass through your awareness. Use them in whatever way feels supportive, without pressure or expectation.
