Is there a type of music that’s bad for sleep?
Can't Sleep/Restless
/core-emotion/cant-sleep-restless
Some types of music can make sleep harder, especially if they increase alertness or emotional engagement. Music with fast tempos, strong rhythms, lyrics, or frequent changes can keep the brain active. What feels relaxing during the day may be too stimulating at night.
Music affects the brain through rhythm, emotion, and memory. At night, these same qualities can work against sleep if they encourage attention, imagery, or anticipation rather than release.
Fast or rhythm-heavy music can subtly increase heart rate and breathing, even if you enjoy it. Lyrics can pull the mind into language processing or personal associations, keeping thought loops active when you’re trying to wind down.
Familiar music can also be stimulating if it carries emotional weight. Songs tied to memories or meaning may feel comforting, but they can keep the mind engaged rather than letting it drift.
Sleep-supportive music is usually simple, predictable, and emotionally neutral. It doesn’t ask the brain to follow, feel, or remember, it just provides a steady backdrop for rest.
Things to Try
Avoid music with lyrics, strong beats, or sudden changes in the hour before bed
Choose slow, minimal soundscapes or ambient music designed specifically for sleep rather than general relaxation
Explore delta-range sleep music (around 0.5-4 Hz) used very softly, especially if you wake during the night
Before bed you could also try some mindful practices, either here in our quick 'Micro practices' section or in the products section, check out our Mishi mindfulness guide. 🙏
