Can music help when I feel overstimulated rather than panicky?

Anxious/Overwhelmed

/core-emotion/anxious-overwhelmed

Yes. Feeling overstimulated is often about having too much coming in, not feeling afraid. Your system is tired, saturated, and asking for fewer demands, and music can help by gently reducing sensory load rather than adding to it.

The right kind of music gives your nervous system something simple and predictable to rest on. It can soften background noise, slow internal pace, and create a sense of containment, without pushing you into 'calm' before you’re ready.

Also, pairing music with a light touch of mindfulness can deepen this effect, helping you notice what’s happening without adding more effort or analysis.

Things to try

  • Listen to music using 528 Hz: this Solfeggio frequency is often used for grounding and emotional balance, and many people find it easier to sit with when feeling overloaded.

  • Choose minimal, low-detail music: simple textures, steady tones, or ambient sound tend to be easier to tolerate than layered or emotional tracks.

  • Add a moment of mindfulness: while the music plays, gently notice one thing you can hear, one thing you can feel in your body, or the rise and fall of your breath, without trying to change anything

  • Use music as a buffer: let it sit between you and the environment (traffic, screens, voices) rather than trying to change how you feel.

If panic is a storm, overstimulation is static. Music doesn’t need to fix it — just give your system somewhere quieter to land.
