Why does loud music make me feel more tired afterward?

Low Energy/Tired

/core-emotion/low-energy-tired

Loud music can be tiring because it places a high load on your nervous system, not because it gives energy. Intense volume forces the brain to work harder to process sound, regulate arousal, and protect itself from overstimulation, which can leave you feeling drained afterward.

When you’re already low on energy, loud or chaotic sound can temporarily push alertness up, but it does so by borrowing from recovery capacity. Once the stimulation stops, the nervous system often drops below baseline, creating heaviness, fatigue, or a 'crash' feeling rather than sustained energy.

This is especially common when loud music is used to push through tiredness instead of matching the body’s actual capacity.

Things to try

  • For one listening session (5–7 minutes), play the same music you usually choose but at a noticeably lower volume, and check afterward whether your energy drops less compared to louder listening.

  • Listen to slow, steady music around 60–70 BPM and track whether your breathing naturally slows, using reduced breath effort as the signal that your system is recovering rather than being pushed.

  • After any loud music exposure, take a few minutes and notice whether your body feels heavier, buzzy, or flat, using that sensation as feedback on whether the volume exceeded your current tolerance.
