Why do I feel wired but exhausted at the same time?

Feeling wired but exhausted usually means your nervous system is overstimulated while your energy reserves are depleted. The body is still in alert mode, even though it’s tired. Gentle, immersive sound experiences can help reduce stimulation without demanding effort.
This wired-but-tired state is common in prolonged stress and burnout. Your body has learned to stay switched on to cope, even when there’s nothing immediate to respond to. As a result, rest doesn’t feel refreshing, and relaxation can feel just out of reach.
The nervous system is caught between two signals: fatigue asking for rest, and stress signalling vigilance. That internal conflict can show up as restlessness, shallow breathing, muscle tension, or racing thoughts paired with low motivation.
Music can help here because it offers containment rather than stimulation. Instead of energising or emotionally engaging you, certain sound environments can hold attention gently, giving the nervous system permission to stop scanning for threats.
This is where deeper listening experiences can be helpful. By surrounding the body with steady, continuous sound, it becomes easier to let alertness soften without needing to consciously relax or 'power down.'

A sound bath-style listening experience: using long, sustained tones or layered ambient sounds, can feel supportive when your body is tired but your system won’t switch off.
Some people find lying down with sound playing quietly around them feels more settling than listening through short tracks or playlists.
Letting the sound wash over you without focusing on any one element can help reduce the sense of internal urgency that often accompanies burnout.
If you’re open to mindfulness, noticing one simple physical cue during the sound, such as where your body feels supported by the floor or bed can help anchor attention without effort. Some people find having a short, guided reminder (like entries from my mindfulness sheets, see below) useful when their energy is too low to improvise.
