What is the Schumann Resonance?
Anxious/Overwhelmed
/core-emotion/anxious-overwhelmed
The Schumann Resonance is a naturally occurring electromagnetic frequency generated between the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere. Its primary frequency sits around 7.83 Hz, often described as the Earth’s subtle background rhythm.
You don’t hear it in the traditional sense, but it’s always present. It exists as part of the planet’s electrical activity, created by lightning strikes and atmospheric energy cycling around the globe. In simple terms, it’s like a quiet, continuous pulse that surrounds us.
Why this happens
The Earth and the ionosphere form a kind of resonant cavity. When lightning discharges energy into this space, it creates standing waves that settle into specific low frequencies. The most stable and dominant of these is 7.83 Hz.
Because this frequency sits within the same general range as slower brainwave states (like relaxed or meditative states), people often associate it with feelings of calm or balance.
While the science is still evolving in terms of how it affects us directly, the idea of a shared natural rhythm is what draws many people to it.
Where music fits
You can’t directly 'hear' 7.83 Hz as a tone, but it can be embedded into music as a rhythmic or pulsing element. In sound design, this often shows up as a slow modulation, a deep underlying movement, or a subtle oscillation that you feel more than you notice.
When used in ambient music, this kind of low-frequency pulsing can create a sense of grounding, like the music is gently holding you in place rather than pulling your attention outward.
Things to Try
Listen to the music below. Earth's Energy, is a dedicated Schumann Frequency track, and has been written using the 7.83Hz frequency.
For 3 minutes, sit still while listening and track one continuous background tone from start to finish; notice if your mind wanders less frequently compared to when no sound is present.
Try reducing the volume to just above silence and focus on whether you can still feel a subtle rhythmic presence; notice if this creates a sense of steadiness or quiet in your body.
After listening, pause for 30 seconds in silence and compare how your body feels before and after the sound; notice any shift in tension, especially in your shoulders or jaw.
